{"id":383,"date":"2016-01-13T23:11:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T04:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triplescomputers.com\/blog\/?p=383"},"modified":"2016-01-19T08:05:02","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T13:05:02","slug":"cannot-uninstall-microsoft-security-essentials-from-windows-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triplescomputers.com\/blog\/casestudies\/cannot-uninstall-microsoft-security-essentials-from-windows-10\/","title":{"rendered":"SOLUTION: Cannot Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials from Windows 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I encountered two different workstations that\u00a0had upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7\u00a0on which Microsoft Security Essentials inexplicably was not uninstalled during the upgrade process by Windows Setup. \u00a0This is baffling, because MSSE isn&#8217;t designed to work with Windows 10 (it\u00a0<em>doesn&#8217;t\u00a0<\/em>work), and plus, it\u00a0precludes the use of Windows Defender, which is essentially the Windows 10 upgraded equivalent of MSSE.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the same situation, you&#8217;ll also discover that it is impossible to\u00a0<em>remove\u00a0<\/em>Microsoft Security Essentials from Programs and\u00a0Features; when attempting to do so, you simply receive a generic message which\u00a0states &#8220;You don&#8217;t need to install Microsoft Security Essentials.&#8221; \u00a0That&#8217;s great, Microsoft, because we don&#8217;t want to install it, we want to\u00a0<em>uninstall\u00a0<\/em>it.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the solution to this problem is actually quite simple:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <strong>Windows Key + R<\/strong> to open the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>In the\u00a0Open: field, type:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>explorer &#8220;%PROGRAMFILES%\\Microsoft Security Client\\&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong>and press ENTER.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the file <strong>Setup.exe<\/strong>, <strong>right-click<\/strong> it, and choose <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Compatibility<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Change settings for all users<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the box next to <em><strong>Run this program in compatibility mode for:<\/strong> <\/em>and choose\u00a0<strong>Windows 7\u00a0<\/strong>from the drop-down box.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK on all dialogue boxes to exit all windows.<\/li>\n<li>In the search box at the bottom of the screen, type\u00a0<strong>cmd<\/strong>.
